The Need

Neglected by society, street children are forced to struggle and scavenge on the streets simply to survive experiencing some devastating evils

After a research was conducted, by our founding Director Farai Katiro, in 2007 on the situation of street children in Zimbabwe’s four major cities of Harare, Bulawayo, Mutare and Masvingo, it became evident, as also revealed by previous studies, that children on the streets are experiencing untold suffering.

Of the 68 street children who were interviewed the main issues that pushed them to the streets were:

  • 33% pointed out abuse by adult
  • 21% death of parents
  • 19% delinquency
  • 17% poverty

This was also confirmed by the 104 former street children and 35 service providers who were interviewed.
